The Castleton Bridge is a cantilever truss bridge over the Hudson River connecting Coeymans, Albany County, with Shawdack, Rensselaer County, New York. It carries the Berkshire Connector of the New York State Thruway. This bridge is also sometimes called the Castleton-on-Hudson Bridge, and it is located near the Alfred H. Smith Memorial Bridge, which is used by railroad traffic.

The Castleton Bridge is located on the longest stretch of New York State Thruway that is not designated as an interstate, between Interchanges 21A (Interstate 87) and B1 (Interstate 90). Crossing this bridge is charged $0.62 one way. It is not collected at a separate barrier, but rather is collected as part of the Thruway toll system. It costs at least $1.05 to cross. ($1.00 with E-ZPass discount) traveling between Interchange 22 and Interchange B1 on the Thruway. It is the northernmost road bridge on the Hudson River to be tolled, and the only bridge to be tolled in both directions (charged as part of the existing Thruway toll system); every road bridge south of this one is tolled only in the eastbound direction.

The Castleton-on-Hudson Bridge is an important piece of infrastructure that brings communities together, and this effort to secure its future is a huge win for our region and all who call it home. This funding, made possible by the unprecedented investment in our bipartisan infrastructure bill, will help ensure that the bridge remains safe and reliable for years to come, supporting the movement of goods and people in the Capital Region and beyond.

This grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHA) Bridge Investment Program (BIP) was made possible by the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, which Congressman Tonko proudly supported. This legislation provided $40 billion in new funding for bridge repair, replacement, and rehabilitation, the largest dedicated investment in bridge construction since the construction of the Interstate Highway System.

This project will restore and strengthen deteriorated sections of the bridge’s eastern superstructure by replacing the eastern structural deck, repairing steel girders, and making other necessary repairs. Building on a separate US$47.6 million construction project already underway to replace the westbound bridge deck, these projects together will extend the expected service life of the bridge by 50 years.

The Castleton-on-Hudson Bridge, also known as the Berkshire Castleton Bridge, is a vital trade and tourism corridor for our Capital Region. Each year, 6.5 million trips are made on this stretch of the New York State Thruway, which connects the towns of Coeymans in Albany County and Shawdack in Rensselaer County on both sides of the Hudson River. The bridge also serves as an important link between New York and Massachusetts.
